Saurashtra Salt Manufacturing Co. v Bai Valu Raja (1958)
Labour Law II · Competent Authority — Powers, Notice, Claim and Deposit
Facts.
A salt-works employee drowned crossing a public creek by ferry on his way home.
Issue.
Was the drowning “in the course of employment” once he had left the works?
Held.
Employment can be notionally extended to a reasonable time and route around the workplace, but on these facts the public ferry crossing fell outside it, so the claim failed.
Why it matters.
It is the leading Indian statement of the notional extension doctrine — cited in every “arising in the course of employment” problem.
