Permissible Deductions — Chapter VI-A (ss.80C–80U) — Law of Taxation Notes
Permissible Deductions — Chapter VI-A (ss.80C–80U)
Two people earn the same salary, but one pays less tax — because she invested in a provident fund, paid a health-insurance premium, and repaid an education loan. Chapter VI-A is where the Act rewards saving and socially useful spending by letting you deduct it from your income before tax.
The scheme of Chapter VI-A
After computing income under the five heads and adding them up, you get the Gross Total Income (GTI). Chapter VI-A (ss.80C–80U) then allows deductions from GTI to arrive at the Total Income on which tax is charged. Two rules bound it: the total Chapter VI-A deduction cannot exceed GTI (it cannot create a loss), and it is not allowed against certain special-rate incomes (like casual winnings).
The step: Gross Total Income − Chapter VI-A deductions = Total Income (taxable).
Headline deductions to know:
- s.80C — investments/payments up to a ceiling (₹1,50,000): life insurance premium, PF/PPF, ELSS, tuition fees, principal on housing loan, NSC, 5-year fixed deposit.
- s.80CCC / 80CCD — pension-fund and National Pension System contributions (with an extra deduction for NPS under 80CCD(1B)).
- s.80D — medical insurance premium (self, family, parents), with a higher limit for senior citizens.
- s.80E — interest on an education loan (no upper limit, for a number of years).
- s.80G — donations to specified funds/charities (50% or 100%).
- s.80GG — rent paid where no HRA is received.
- s.80TTA/80TTB — interest on savings deposits (and deposits for senior citizens).
- s.80U — a flat deduction for a person with a disability; s.80DD/80DDB for maintenance/medical treatment of a disabled dependant or specified disease.

🧩 WORKED EXAMPLE — From GTI to Total Income
Facts. Gross Total Income ₹8,00,000; s.80C investments ₹1,50,000; s.80D medical insurance ₹25,000; s.80E education-loan interest ₹15,000.
Rule. Total Income = GTI − eligible Chapter VI-A deductions (each within its own ceiling; total not to exceed GTI).
Apply.
- GTI 8,00,000
- Less 80C 1,50,000 + 80D 25,000 + 80E 15,000 = 1,90,000
Conclusion. Total Income = ₹6,10,000 — tax is charged on this, not on the ₹8,00,000. Chapter VI-A rewarded ₹1,90,000 of saving and socially useful spending.
In Simple Terms: After adding up income from all five heads (Gross Total Income), Chapter VI-A lets you subtract savings and good-cause spending — provident fund and insurance (80C), health insurance (80D), education-loan interest (80E), donations (80G) — to reach the smaller “Total Income” you actually pay tax on.
